We are a spiritual church that
believes in the proclamation of the Word. We show one-on-one concern
for each other and for those around us. We care about the spiritual,
mental, physical and social needs of each individual. Service through
outreach projects allows us to demonstrate the active role we have
chosen to play in our community.
How to Join Our Church
- During the worship, when the
pastor extends the invitation to join and gives the altar call, you
may go down the aisle to inform the pastor of your desire to join.
You may also inform the pastor or Session member privately.
- You must attend and complete
membership classes.
- Upon completion of the classes,
the method of acceptance will be determined.
- The Session will then interview
you. You will be introduced to the congregation and given the right
hand of fellowship.
Westminster opens its door with the
love of God, through Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit.
Membership shall not be denied any person because of race, economic or
social circumstances, or any other reason not related to profession or
faith.
The Physical Plant:
The Westminster Presbyterian Church at 2230 West Jefferson Boulevard
and 3rd Avenue stands stately and tall with its tiled Spanish roof,
belfry and cross. The bulletin board proudly announces the weekly
services, and the cornerstone historical data. Endowed with
magnificent stained glass windows, and rich in Christian symbolism,
the edifice inspires all who are mindful of these resources to enter
with praise, thanksgiving and clean hearts – ready to serve and
worship Him.
The east wing, a three level Educational Unit, contains the reception
office on the main floor, the MacPherson Parlor, conference room,
ladies lounge, Alexander Chapel, Pastor’s study, Deacon’s supply,
first-aid, and storage rooms. The upper level contains the Sunday
School Offices, Trustee room, video room, classrooms, Associate
Pastor’s Office and a chapel. The lower level has rooms of varying
sizes. This level is dominated by Fellowship Hall, with kitchen and
pantry. Public restrooms are on each level.
The SANCTUARY of Gothic and Romanesque architecture has a vaulted
ceiling, arched structure with hanging lamps. Wheel chairs can be
accommodated. The carved Communion table inscribed “Do this in
Remembrance of Me” contains a graded cross with three steps symbolic
of faith, hope and charity. Two candles on either side of the cross
represent the two natures o our Lord, the human and the divine. The
candelabra’s seven branches and candles represent the gifts of the
Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit, which are: wisdom, understanding, counsel,
strength, knowledge, godliness, and the fear of the Lord. Over the
choir loft is a Celtic Cross, above which is a large three-paneled
window in brilliant colors of “Christ Praying on the Rock in the
Garden.” The choir room behind the loft has an extensive music
library, robe closets, restrooms, and lounge. Above the loft is a
chamber which houses the pipes for the organ.
The church was built in 1931, and acquired by the Westminster
congregation of June 12, 1949. It has been declared an historical site
by the City of Los Angeles.
Future Plans:
In keeping with its mission to reach out to serve the community both
spiritually and physically, plans are underway to make Westminster a
community center. This would include expanding its programs to include
computer training for seniors and youth and enlarging the present
clothing and food bank.
Plans are also underway to remodel the kitchen, restrooms main office
and to install an elevator.
We also look forward to expanding our senior housing program.
