STATEMENT OF FAITH
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the
communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one true God,
The Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve.
We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the
reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the
captives, teaching by work and deed and blessing the children, healing
the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts,
forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.
WHAT WE BELIEVE
“In Life and in Death we Belong to God”
With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in
life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
Then Jesus told him, “You believe because you have seen me. But
blessed are those who haven’t seen me and believe anyway.”
John 20:29
MISSION STATEMENT
To be a spiritual church that believes in the proclamation of the
Word.
Show one-on-one concern for each other and for those around us.
Care about the spiritual, mental, physical and social needs of each
individual and our community.
Place emphasis on prayer and our teaching ministry.
Worship is as important to us as our service to our membership and to
those in the community around us.
Ensure that our children learn, experience, and live the gospel.
Be a warm and caring congregation exhibited through outreach projects
that allow us to demonstrate the active role we have chosen to perform
in our community.
To value both the visceral and visible elements as we participate in
the holy sacraments of Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
Love each other with brotherly affection and take delight in honoring
each other. Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord
enthusiastically. Romans 12:10, 11
ABOUT US
Westminster Presbyterian Church is a family community dedicated to
living and serving Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
We are the oldest and largest African American Presbyterian church
west of the Mississippi. In our 100 years of existence, we have only
had four regular pastors. Two of the four served for a total of 72
years. In our 75th year, our building received historical landmark
status.
Every worship service includes a three part altar call which
encompasses the invitation to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior,
the invitation to join the church, and the opportunity to ask the
Elders for prayer. We rejoice in the music from our Sanctuary and
Children’s choirs. A yearly Revival is held in the month of February
as part of our annual celebration of African American History Month.
Lay liturgists are an integral part of every worship service. The
response of pew to pulpit is more interactive than most traditional
Presbyterian services.
A larger than average number of our members participate at the
Presbytery Synod levels. However, while other churches have gone to
the unicameral system, we are very traditional in that we have a
Trustee Board.
Westminster’s church family is second-to-none in terms of nurturing,
sustaining and supporting each other through crisis situations s well
as personal joy occasions.
The sponsoring of the Dr. Charles H. Moore –Westminster Arms senior
housing complex is one testimony of our dedication to serving our
community .
We welcome everyone regardless of denominational affiliation. We
believe that the Bible is God’s Word and that we re here to serve all.
Westminster Presbyterian Church (USA) is a denominational part of the
Presbyterian Church (USA), and is a member of the Presbytery of the
Pacific
