(Rites and Sacraments)
BAPTISM
Water Baptism is a sacrament instituted by Christ, and is a part
of the full expression of the Word of God. This sacrament is not
administered as a measure to ensure salvation, but shows forth the
redemptive power of the Word of God in Jesus Christ. Upon public
confession of faith, this sacrament is a means of testifying to,
and receiving the reality of God’s grace. The water of the
sacrament symbolizes that in Christ, God washes away the sin which
is inseparable from the human condition, and this sign shows to
whom the baptized persons now belong.
Christian parents, after a conference with the pastor, may present
their children, including infants, for baptism. They must affirm
in public their duty to rear the child to love and serve God. The
congregation, too, promises to surround the child with love and
concern in Christ.
THE LORD’S SUPPER
The Lord’s Supper is the sacrament based on Jesus words and
actions at the last meal with the Apostles, and it commemorates
Jesus’ perfect sacrifice on our behalf. It enables us to
experience the saving power of God’s love through Christ, and it
nourishes our faith. Those invited to share the Lord’s Supper
include all people who confess their faith in Jesus Christ and
those who have been baptized. Their baptized children who have
been instructed and confirmed may also partake at the discretion
of the parents. An ordained minister of the church presides at the
celebration of the Lord’s Supper, and Elders, Deacons, and
layperson may assist in the distribution of the elements. The
Lord’s Supper is celebrated regularly at Westminster on the first
Sunday of the month during the morning worship service, as well as
on other designated occasions.
WEDDINGS
Marriage is usually the culmination of a love relationship, and/or
an agreement between two persons who wish to be joined in a
legally binding commitment to one another. Weddings which take
place in the church are under the direction of the pastor. At
Westminster, counseling by the pastor is required, as well as
early scheduling for use of the facilities. Counseling
appointments and facility applications may be obtained by calling
the church office.
FUNERALS
Westminster provides a supportive relationship to the bereaved
congregants and to other persons who request assistance. Church
officers and the pastor counsel families regarding funeral
arrangements, and services necessary for the Christian funeral and
burial. Those desiring the pastoral services of the church may
call the church office to arrange counseling, assistance, and use
of the facilities. Scheduling conflicts are minimized if the
family consults with the Pastor and mortician prior to arranging
the time of the service.
